Summary
Dean is lost in a barren desert landscape, his past and his identity stripped from him in the transition between worlds. Guided by a deep internal pull toward a man he only sees in his dreams, Dean crosses the desert alone, on foot, until he finds a strange boy named Sam living in the ruins of an ancient city.
Written for the Sam/Dean minibang, this is an AU version of Dean's ascent from Hell after S3. It's also a kind of a fusion, or possibly just an homage, to Stephen King's The Gunslinger. I don't think it's necessary to have read the Gunslinger to follow the story. Please see the end notes for additional info, warnings, and thanks.

There’s beer and staring at stars, an angel who thinks he’s a god, a cranky old hunter with too much time on his hands, and a brother with maybe just a few screws loose in his head. Summary
AU after the end of Season 3. Having failed to keep the hellhounds for coming from Dean, Sam turns to classic literature to find another way to bring his brother back. Sam’s descent into the land of Hades in pursuit of his brother’s soul is about as easy as the legends suggest: unidirectional. Still, Sam knows the track record of the souls allowed to return, and he’s determined to use Dean’s status as a hero to his advantage. But first he has to convince the sullen Summer Queen that they are worth something as a pair, and then he has to trust Dean to follow him home.

Dean’s willing to stick around for the bacon donuts and the chance to see the O.K. But after so many years things have gotten lost or been forgotten. Dean had watched the changes and slowly withdrew from the world and society, becoming less involved and less aware of the shifting currents of change. But when he has a prophetic dream about the Devil’s Gate being opened, Dean finds himself coming out of the shadows and making himself known to the world again.
