It is 1932. Castiel, the adopted son, serves as the Sant’Angelo crime family’s hitman, a ruthless soldier who kills indiscriminately without questions. It is only when Castiel is contracted to kill Dean Winchester, his childhood obsession, that his world is torn asunder. Suddenly, in the face of the man he once loved, Castiel begins to doubt himself and nothing can prepare him for how quickly everything seems to fall apart.
“I need you to kill a man named Dean Winchester.”
A bullet to the chest would have had the same effect. Castiel felt a sudden burst of adrenaline pump into his system, leaving his head light with… far too many emotions to sort through. Castiel was not prepared for the tidal wave that the name brought. A name he had tried so hard to forget ever existed. It fell so loosely and carelessly from his brother’s mouth, as if meant nothing. Yet for Castiel, the name carried such a weight, so barbed and multi-faceted with a myriad of thoughts and regrets. And everything, all of it, hit Castiel with such force that he had to grab onto the chair to prevent himself from falling over.

Castiel succeeds in stopping the apocalypse, but at a price. He loses his Grace and leaves the Winchesters. After Falling, he is found by a twelve-year-old hunter. For a year, he stays with Jude and her sister, Fae. He learns to be human, finds a new family.
It doesn’t last long. There’s an angel who wants him dead and Fae and Jude get dragged into the chase. They take two separate journeys and by what seems to be pure chance, Fae bumps into the Winchesters, unaware that her sister is travelling with the very person they’re grieving for.
Days pass, tension rises, secrets are revealed, stories are told, one last battle fought and what was thought to be coincidence starts to seem an awful lot like Fate…

In the year 1944, after their father dies, Dean and Sam are left with the remains of his infantry team deep among the forests and rivers of France where it can be hard to find a way out. Supplies are running low, Axis forces are pressing in all around, and there's a plane following them.
The question of whether the pilot is friend or foe is answered when he crashes, saving Dean from an ambush, and now Dean has a choice to make. He can help Castiel and his brother get back to Switzerland, or he can press on with his father's covert mission, worries about Sam's loyalty aside—or he can go home.
