Summary
They drag him from the Anderfels to Ferelden when he is only twelve years old, to trap him between stone walls together with people he does not know and a language he barely understands. Karl is the first person he connects with then, and later becomes many other different kinds of first to him; each others' light in the grey prison.
More than half a lifetime later in the Kirkwall Chantry, he forces himself to free Karl from a crueller prison still.
Ten years later, he reduces the Chantry to dust, the last hope in his heart one of freedom for mages everywhere.

She wonders if they have built it so in the hopes that if she cannot see the outside world, she will forget about it and let all dreams of a life outside the tower go. She traces secret patterns on the stone walls and paints pictures of memories on the back of her eyelids. She creates a tiny winter in the palm of her hand, because she will never be allowed out in the real one.
