It was time between classes, he was leaning against the wall - never a great idea in cold weather like this, but he couldn't be bothered - and holding Mr. Wiggums, debating whether to carry on the rather dull conversation with one of the other apprentices or break it off, and risk having absolutely nothing to distract him. It was a hard decision, he scratching Mr. Wiggums behind the ears and frowning down at the twitching whiskers, wondering whether them twitching forward meant yes as in yes, do stay or yes, go now. He had long since accepted the wisdom of Mr. Wiggums, but did not always know how to divine it. It was a skill he'd have to work on.

Karl is the first person he connects with then, and later becomes many other different kinds of first to him; each others' light in the grey prison.
More than half a lifetime later in the Kirkwall Chantry, he forces himself to free Karl from a crueller prison still.
Years later he reduces that Chantry to dust, the last hope in his heart one of freedom for mages everywhere.
