Summary
"It isn't that difficult," Chrestomanci went on. "I did it for the first time when I was twelve, and barely knew what it meant." His usually cool voice had gone warm with reminiscence. Cat looked up, trying to imagine Chrestomanci being twelve. "It felt marvelous."
Cat becomes Chrestomanci, briefly.

Summary
I had been on a walk with Flavian, when Bernard and I were both new. We had run into a salamander, and it had ended with me needing sixteen stitches and Bernard unable to sit down for a week. Christopher did warn me—"I shouldn't go if I were you, Hester; hiking is not one of the mandatory subjects"—but I'd trusted my previous experiences with teachers more than I'd trusted Christopher; and besides, my name isn't Hester.
Christopher and the young enchanters go to the circus. Conrad and Flavian go for a walk in the forest. Things go very wrong.

Summary
Christopher was not the first to decide that Mr. Flavian Temple was in dire need of a wife. The staff of Chrestomanci Castle had been saying as much for years (although it was only after Flavian and Tacroy's making a strong case for Christopher's not being being completely and utterly horrible that they deigned to grace him with this opinion). Christopher was fairly certain, however, that he was the first one to posit that that wife should be Tacroy.

"She's terrifying," said Flavian.
"Isn't she?" Mordecai sighed happily.
Flavian doesn't know what Mordecai sees in Rosalie. Gabriel doesn't know what Rosalie sees in Mordecai. Maybe it's just as well.

Summary
Flavian thought that the reason for the subterfuge was so that no one in the Wraith organization would know that Mordecai was meeting him, but the real reason was so that Flavian wouldn't know that the Wraith organization was perfectly well aware that Mordecai was meeting him. Mordecai sighed for a time when his life had been less complicated, but it had never been, really.

"Frost," I said scornfully. "I suppose this is what happens in a world where you haven't got a proper goddess to manage things."

This is so wonderful! I love that Millie's character is developed in a way that we never saw in the books, and especially that the author expands on the time between Lives of Christopher Chant and Conrad's fate, as I adore both of those books and have longed to see more of them during that time period. I really appreciate that the author didn't shy away from their awful tempers and how difficult it had to have been for everyone to adjust to their lives in the castle/at boarding school. I also love the glimpses of the friendship and pre-romance between Millie and Christopher, as well as how they relate to the other children in the castle. <3333333

There was nothing Lucia hated more than washing up. She hated sticking her hands into murky water without knowing what was lurking there. She hated the way her skin got wrinkly and gross. And she hated the way there was no end of it.

"We'll get your magic back, you know. Everyone's. The Wraith isn't being very cooperative, but there are others in the organization who'll know what's been done with it, and who'll be more amenable to persuasion."
"Well," says Flavian. Dubiously, because experience has taught him that anything he wants this badly to be true probably isn't. "You would know."
Mordecai explains a few things to Flavian.
