So the only way I can make it work is to have modern!Holmes the victim of cruel parental naming practices. He retreated into the life of the mind and avoided pop culture as much as possible as self-defense against the constant barrage of Conan Doyle references! And when he realized as a result he was only suited to be a consulting detective, he cursed the cruel irony of the world!
