Summary
Fran was grateful she did not have to waste time considering what he would have wanted. She had been warder, not salve-maker. Pirate was new to her, as new as it was to Balthier, though he insisted it was not. But the gambits he had given her guided her hands.

Summary
It has been a long time since they've spent time on the coast. Balthier always means to visit more often. Fran finds ocean air invigorating, and while he enjoys her company no matter the setting, she is at her most creative on their costal jaunts.
"I am yours to command."
"Rare words from a leading man." Her voice is thick with amusement, and her ears curl towards him, a sign that she's devoting all of her attention to him.

Summary
"I may become concerned," Fran murmurs, her legs matching Balthier's length, tangling, "that you fuss about your face overmuch now when such fancies you have scorned before; do you seek to beguile the boy or the man?"

Summary
Fran follows him to his ship. He caresses the hull; moves within with a grace of long-practice. She marvels that he pilots it partnerless but for his below-decks workcrew; the complexity of control is not a thing for a man to bear alone.

Summary
The brush was a new one, made from soft rabbit hair. Fran could still scent the animal traces, as Balthier trailed the dry bristles along the curve of her cheek.

"Let me stand." It sounds a demand. His amelioration is suspect: "If you truly wish to watch, it's easier that way."

Summary
"Pirate engineer," Balthier says, as though she has not spoken. "There's not too many of them about, I never thought to find someone else as interested in the guts as well as the glory. You handled the Strahl's rings well that day out there without even asking what the extra one was for. I hadn't expected a woman to know more than the essentials. I was impressed."
"I," Fran says, "was not."

Summary
Gilt-green eyes peer up through round spectacles, tea-gold eyes unimpeded but for white lashes. Both gazes are swamped with pleading. The marlboro looks ridiculous in swaddling. If Balthier had known what the twins wanted with their old baby blankets, he would have refused to open the store.

The angle turns lens to mirror: twin circles worth of sky look at her. Balthier's recent silence has not been as light as his tone now. 'Is this how you'll tell me you're pregnant, then?'

Summary
The space is narrow and thick with blood's stench. Basch's left shoulder abrades against a fallen mass of concrete on one side, his fingertips touching the wind-taut thrum of tent on other. Basch stares for long, thoughtless moments. His heart's beat is rapid enough that it sounds like a man running. Basch breathes, and hurts; he breathes until hurt should subside; he breathes, but he still hurts.

Summary
Balthier's eyes open with dawn, but he is unseeing for long moments, the chill stone of his bed no comfort. Fran did not sleep the night prior, a thank you for the several nights he had not; she does not mock his lassitude now. They do not breakfast. Balthier takes a handful of snow to rub across his face, brisk, his hand through his hair as though he does not dare hypothermia; Fran toys with a milky icicle snapped from their cave's mouth, and does not think of pastries, cream, star fruit and pomegranates.
