Much later, approaching Attolia's Audience Hall to make his greetings, Ahirom remembered that afternoon. Perhaps it was because that sunny day on the quay was the last moment of peace in his new, diminished life. It was the last moment of peace before he learned that his brother the King of Eblos was sending him, untrained and unprepared, on a diplomatic mission as the punchline of an infantile joke.
