Summary
Captain James Stewart was not a man who accepted failure or defeat at face value. He was also not a man to trust in his losses. Those features may be the only thing that saves him from a life spent alone after the horrors of war, as after his resounding defeat he goes back to the battlefield where his one irreplaceable treasure was lost.

Summary
1917 should have been perfect for Kurt Hummel. His father's business is booming, he's going to college in the fall, and he's started to get along with his ex-bully, Dave Karofsky, the son of his father's gardener. Then Dave enlists in the Air Service and goes to war, before they have a chance to set things right between them. Two months after he left, Dave writes him a letter.
Written for the 2011/12 Kurtofsky Reverse Bang.

What possibly could make this pairing more depressing? Oh! I know! What if I wrote an AU where they fought in WWI. (And had a near-miss with Tolkien.) Yes, I think that will do nicely.

Summary
1917. Craiglockhart, a mental hospital in Scotland. Erik Lehnsherr is a Siegfried Sassoon-esque World War I poet, and Charles Xavier (Wilfred Owen) is a fellow patient at the hospital who turns out to share more than Lehnsherr's gift for poetry. Everyone's still a mutant, but the origins of the mutations are a peculiar form of shellshock, and (given the dates) major hunks of folks' backstories are different.

The three of them have draped a tarpaulin over their bit of the trench--or what Archie calls a tarpaulin, although it's scarcely better than a thin cotton sheet worn translucent with cold sweat and the steady friction of night-tremors.

But war breaks out and separates them, and it seems unlikely that they will meet again. After all, what are the odds?
