Autumn, 1998: The second war with Voldemort is only over on paper. Sherlock Holmes is demystifying the weirder instances of Dark Magic, at least when he's clean enough Lestrade lets him. Healer John Watson has been invalided out of action for werewolf-related wounds, but isn't ready to give up the fight. And there seems to be a new and very different Dark Lord rising in Voldemort's wake, and no one's quite sure who he is or what he wants.

Karkat Vantas, a dishonored Knight, has sworn his allegiance to the King of his enemies to save his own life. Their relationship has become tense and complicated, full of brooding and blame. John has to remind Karkat why he loves him as well as hates him but Karkat lives in the past and his personality dosen't make reconciliation easy.
