An Ashen fanfic.
No friendships. Ever. That's what Kanaya told her weeks prior, but Rose never really grasped the full of it until she found herself at the end of an Ashen crush. Now the Trolls are growing and the culture gap widening, the demon pounding on the door and the horrors whispering in ears. At the centre of it all: Rose, trying to stand on both sides of the shore: without magic, without guidance and without one of her closest friends thanks to the very gap she is trying to bridge. This fic is dedicated to the Alternian third wheel.

Numbers did not exist when it came into being, the arrangement of sparkbeats into astroseconds, astroseconds into kliks, breems, joor … rotations into cycles, cycles into vorn, each one thing distinct and connected to the next. The memory exists before these things, is born nameless, when glyphs were simple, single things of *warmth* and *alarm* and *energon*.
The first memory begins with light.

There was a certain order to Alternia and its people, one that hadn't been disrupted in hundreds and hundreds of sweeps. There was a way trolls were supposed run their lives; a way they were meant to be born and raised that had carried on as long as their species could recollect.
That was all knocked out of line by one sorry, unprecedented mutant.
