Summary
In this Alternate Universe version of the SGA pilot, Rising, Colonel Sumner is in charge of an expedition which is almost all male and all military. John Sheppard is a military pet - a submissive who has been trained to service others. Sumner decides he has to prove he is trustworthy before letting him go on the expedition, so has Sheppard come to his house to bond with the Marines. Later, he tells O'Neill he accepts Sheppard, but O'Neill has to see for himself first. Once they are in Atlantis, Sheppard is restricted to helping out in the labs, rather than going on missions, so Sumner gives control of him over to Rodney McKay, who is still head scientist on the expedition.

When Major John Sheppard shoots Colonel Sumner, he thinks of only one thing: keep the creature feeding on him from learning their secrets. He doesn't think that with that one act, he'll become Alpha of the pack in the Atlantis expedition.
That alone is weird enough, but John still has to navigate his new werewolf pack, military politics, witches, evil space vampires, Genii, and Replicators. There's the bonus complication of the grief, joy, wonder, and terror that is life in the Pegasus Galaxy. Add to that his frustration with--and maybe even feelings for--Dr Rodney McKay, and now the lone-wolf life John once enjoyed is even further behind him than it was the moment he stepped through the stargate and emerged in the city of Atlantis.

All in all, a good day, John thinks as he leaves the briefing room. Sure, Ford was nearly blown to bits pulling McKay away from yet another Ancient device gone wrong, but in the end, they both got away mostly unharmed. Nodding his head to Teyla and McKay, heading in their separate directions, John heads towards the infirmary to check up on the lieutenant. Early on, the team came to an almost entirely unspoken agreement that on occasions when one of them was superficially wounded, John would be the first to visit them in the infirmary. Unlike occasions when one of them is badly wounded and not even a direct order from Elizabeth could pull any of them away.
