Naturally his return causes John to question more than just his coping strategy (he should have expected it, really), and the result makes Sherlock curious about something he never thought would interest him: being part of a family.

"No worries, mate. I'm shipping out to Afghanistan in a week," the man says in response, like it's no big deal. "There, now we've both tossed out complete non-sequiturs."
AKA a younger Sherlock and John meet outside a bar before John's first due to ship out to Afghanistan. It goes from there.
