Summary
It was a beautiful morning, and it it promised to become a beautiful day.
Aoi Kurashiki, however, was not looking at the sky. His voice was not one of the voices forcing back the silence. He did not stand clustered in the little group gathered around the lifeboat but sat a short way down the beach, the damp sand soaking through the fabric of his pants.

Summary
In any other year, the words upon the page would have been a disaster. Where would they get the money for food, not to mention the other necessities? But this year, after a whole zoo had seemed possible, his sister’s actual wish felt like a reprieve.

Summary
The dry ice was in the freezer. The photos were in their bags. The books were in the library. He had run down the list of preparations twenty times or more, but Aoi was still going out of his goddamn mind. How his sister could be so fucking calm was beyond him. He couldn’t sit still, couldn’t calm his nerves, couldn’t stop thinking about what would begin in slightly over an hour.
Which was how he found himself on the floor of the third-class cabin with a “7” marked on the door, stripped below the waist and straddling an ex-PI[…]

Summary
The Kurashiki boy awoke with a groan, shifting slightly in his bonds. Gentarou watched as his arms flexed, testing the strength of the restraints, observed as he repeated the process for his legs. Finally, the boy lifted his face- eyes bright with anger, lips pulled back from his teeth in a snarl. Together, the details told him nothing useful. He may as well have selected a different subject altogether, if not for the little label in the file outside the boy’s door- if not for the fact that he had watched his employees move the subject from his room, unconscious, not ten minutes hence.
Aoi Kurashiki, he told himself, as he watched the way the boy’s brows pulled down, creasing his forehead. Aoi Kurashiki. But by the time he had glanced away and back again, the face had become inscrutable once more- a stranger on the street, for all the familiarity it contained.

Summary
Aoi doesn’t know what he plans to do until he’s moving. His hand doesn’t stop to ask permission from his brain- it only reaches into his pocket and pulls forth a slightly crumpled bookmark salvaged from the cushions of a couch earlier tonight. He holds it out to her like he’s thrusting it away, the third time he’s made the offer. Where Junpei refused him and the woman with the number “8” bracelet left it lying on the floor, though, Clover reaches out to take it. Her fingers close around the picture of her namesake just a little too tightly.

Summary
Then the future had begun to take shape before his eyes. It was a future with Akane in it. It was a future in which half-realized hopes might come out from hiding.
It was not, he thought, a future in which Aoi Kurashiki would ever be lying beneath him, legs wrapped around his waist and spouting insults, but three months later, here he was. The future was a funny thing sometimes.

Summary
Aoi had to twist to see what he was doing- but even with the sidelong view and a poor angle, he knew what to make of the small, green arrows. He’d programmed the puzzle himself, after all- tested it no less than seven times in preparation for this day. By the way the man seemed to be working his way through it, methodical and steady, it wouldn’t take him long. However he might look, the man they’d been calling Seven was nothing like an idiot. With him at the controls and Akane there to offer helpful hints, he’d be free of these goddamn manacles in no time flat. After that, it was smooth sailing: the coffin, the pair of 9 doors, and finally- finally- the guarantee that his sister would still be safe when all of this was over.
His thoughts were hours away. His eyes were on the screen.
Consequently, the first he saw of the axe was when it came down on the back of Seven’s skull, lodging there with the sound that a ripe melon makes upon being split open.

Summary
Junpei still does not know why he always has such urgency- why the sex is always rough and hurried, the words biting. He thinks that perhaps it is a way to forget. He has seen the changes in the man’s body, marked the weight lost where there was little enough to lose. There are dark patches below the man’s eyes, and Junpei knows all about that. He understands sleepless nights, and checking five times to ensure the window is locked, and the nightmares that wait inside your own head. Junpei still does not know the man’s last name, but he thinks he knows this, at least.
