Description:

"What you need to understand is that the Goa'uld are small fry. They're not all that different from us, they just have some fancy technology. There are things out there that have consumed entire planets for lunch. That's why this mission is so important, Major. The Ancients managed to survive over sixty-five million years in a very hostile universe. If we can learn to reproduce their sciences and technology, we'll have a chance not just against the Goa'uld and the Replicators, but against things like NIGHTMARE GREEN if the great old ones return from beyond space-time to eat our brains."

Notes:

Recently I discovered Cthulhutech, an interesting RPG setting that combines Lovecraft with cyberpunk and anime tropes. The stars are right, the Great Old Ones are returning, but humanity has the science and technology, both mundane and arcane, to fight back. It reminded me of Charlie Stross' excellent novels The Atrocity Archives and The Jennifer Morgue, which also blend Lovecraft, computer science, and dark humor. It started me thinking about what SG-1 would be like in universe where things worse than just parasitic brain-snakes lurked in warped structures on cold, dead worlds.

So here I am, then, starting off yet another new series that will begin roughly around "Rising". The focus will mostly be on an alternate SGA, but SG-1 will pop up from time to time. I'm freely playing around with canon, both by incorporating squamous things from beyond the stars and turning off the stupid ray so I can inject some common sense, including some ideas from [info - personal] synecdochic's "City on the Edge of Forever" and other sources. I'm also mixing and matching some characters, partly because I want a more balanced expedition and partly because I'd rather write about characters I like (or like to hate). That means not just Ford and Grodin, but also Lorne, Cadman, Mehra, and everyone's favorite flyboy. The city will be much bigger and city-sized, instead of being a floating town, and the Ancients will be creepier, as will their genes.
