A constant reminder

Soulmates, these days, are only stories; as everyone knows, soulmates just stopped existing, suddenly, about a thousand years ago. These days, nobody's born with the name of the person meant for them on their skin, and the closest most people get to soulmates is picking up a bad harlequin romance about them at their local bookstores.
Tony Stark, as usual, isn't like most people.
(Or: In a world where there hasn't been a human soulmate pair in over a thousand years, Tony's born with a name at the small of his back, a magnetic pull at his spine that seems to lead to nowhere, and no soulmate that he can find on the face of the planet. Understandably, he isn't very pleased about this.)
- Part 1 of A constant reminder
As the story goes, Odin, in the days when the worlds were new, used his knowledge of runes to give a gift to the nine worlds. Through Odin's gift, any being with a soul on the nine worlds could find the one match of their soul, their perfect pair, bound to them by the World Tree itself. Each of the nine races received Odin's gift in a different form; yet all beings with souls received that gift in some way.
Why, then, Loki wonders, is he so far into adulthood, and yet unmarked?
(Or: In a world where everything with a soul receives a mark linking them to their soulmate, Loki reaches adulthood with no sign of the rune that all Aesir use to find their soulmates. Without any better explanation, Loki is convinced he's a monster long before he learns of his Jotunn heritage.)
Loki's POV companion to my last Tony/Loki soulmate snippet.
- Part 2 of A constant reminder
Tony's been waiting for his soulmate for over thirty years; Loki's been waiting for over a millenium.
That doesn't mean either of them knows what to actually do with a soulmate, once they've met.
(Or: What Thor the movie would have looked like if it was a soulmates AU with Tony Stark in it.)
