The marriage was something of an arrangement; mutually, they came to it late. The first night equally proved a collaborative effort, ponderous manipulation of limbs and, lost in moans, the startling discovery of a matching sensuality.

Summary
Perhaps everything passes precisely as it is meant to, his mother truly blinded those final days as she had been in Landis to not see what would pass. Noah holds as steady in pace as he had back then when Landis burned, fates guiding him, never stumbling, even here, up each damned flight of stairs that graces Tsenoble's highest walks, to where he will burn his mother's remains to ash.

The expression in Fran's eyes was unreadable, but her lips were moist, her ears quivering. Balthier considered his options then, desires that always proved conflicted between convention and response, want and need, an outward life that must be maintained and the longing that ever went unspoken.

Summary
Balthier's eyes open with dawn, but he is unseeing for long moments, the chill stone of his bed no comfort. Fran did not sleep the night prior, a thank you for the several nights he had not; she does not mock his lassitude now. They do not breakfast. Balthier takes a handful of snow to rub across his face, brisk, his hand through his hair as though he does not dare hypothermia; Fran toys with a milky icicle snapped from their cave's mouth, and does not think of pastries, cream, star fruit and pomegranates.

Summary
It's down here, in Lowtown, with the starving and the near-starving, watching the people try, still spitting defiance - Basch's final defiance, no surrender – Vossler thinks he understands, that he wonders, what right does a single person have to dictate what happens to this country, these people? What right does a pale-skinned girl have to tell these sun-gold citizens that they should suffer in her stead, for her pride, for her birthright, a grace they will never experience?

Summary
"The purpose," Balthier repeats, "of wrestling, of this marvelous display of muscle and madness, is to command submission. What Azelas is doing–" Basch hisses into the sand, thrashes unbidden; Vossler's teeth, his breath is at the nape of Basch's neck "—is what's called a hold down. As you can see by where he's putting his hand, he intents to emphasize his physical superiority over his opponent, who, despite his considerable exertion, can't quite achieve release. Or does my assertion come prematurely—?"

Summary
Azelas, or so a desert-crazy history lecturer had taught one young Archadian, was a name sourced in the original desert tribes, ancestors who had been Dalmascan before even Raithwall's ascendancy, since even before Dalmasca was called what it was. The joke (rumour, reputation, myth) circled amongst Imperials who had fallen foul of Vossler's command or of his greatsword's shadow. Captain Azelas' bloodline had been so long in Dalmasca that his kind burned black with the sun that bleached everyone else so blonde.

Summary
The space is narrow and thick with blood's stench. Basch's left shoulder abrades against a fallen mass of concrete on one side, his fingertips touching the wind-taut thrum of tent on other. Basch stares for long, thoughtless moments. His heart's beat is rapid enough that it sounds like a man running. Basch breathes, and hurts; he breathes until hurt should subside; he breathes, but he still hurts.

They stayed. Basch turns over. The shift in weight disturbs Fran enough she flaps an ear flat, which brushes past Balthier's nose. His eyes open at the motion, still veiled with sleep, and close again. He makes an unhappy sound at the need to rise, a plaintive: 'Another hour…'
Basch can give them that, wants to give them more, wants to take more. The both of them stayed. There are no apologies due this morning.

Ashe delivers Basch mulled wine where he stands watch. Basch wears Balthier's fur against the cold; his hair threads through the collar, gold turned to silver by moonlight. The snow sets sparkling jewels amidst hair, fur and lashes alike, an illusion that cascades as Basch unfolds his arms to wrap bare hands around the mug's metal.

His smile flashes white against sunkissed skin, bronze hair, his sideburns are thicker, a new scar tallied along his jaw. Too feral a beast to be housed, his smell extends beyond his shoulders' breadth: sweat, heat, citrus (and Ashe remembers his habit of consuming oranges, skin, pith, seed, flesh entire, devoured with gusto).
