What is a series?

A series is a set of works that a creator has decided to group together, usually because they form a sequence or share a common universe. When works are posted as a series, they can be navigated in sequence using links that appear in each work. All works in a series are also listed on that series' index page. The index page can be accessed via a link on each individual work page or the "Series" link on the creator's dashboard.

A series is different from a collection. A series belongs solely to a single creator or designated set of co-creators, whereas anyone can submit work to a collection. In addition, the works in a collection have no specific order, while the works in a series have an order determined by the creator. Refer to the Collections and Challenges FAQ for more information about collections.

If you're posting several related parts, you can decide whether to post them as a series of works or as chapters of a single, multi-chaptered work. Refer to How do I add a new chapter to a work? for more information on how to post a multi-chaptered work.

How do I navigate among works in a series?

To move among the works in a series, you can either navigate sequentially or use the series index page.

To navigate sequentially, use the "«" and "»" links that appear at the end of each work. For example, suppose you are on the first work in a series entitled "Epic Saga". At the end of the final chapter, you will find the following text:

Series this work belongs to:
Part 1 of the Epic Saga series »

Follow the "»" link to be taken to the next work in the series. Similarly, when you go to later works in the series, there will be a "«" link to take you back to the previous work.

To find a list of all the works in a series, go the series' index page. You can access this page in several ways. In the example above, following the "Epic Saga" link will take you to the index page for this series. A link will also appear in the work's blurb. Lastly, to find a list of all of a user's series, navigate to that user's Series page (http://archiveofourown.org/users/USERNAME/series) and follow the link to the series you want to access.

How are warnings, tags, and ratings determined for a series?

When information about a series is displayed on an index page (such as the page listing all of a creator's series, or on a search results page), the tags (including fandom, character, relationship, and any additional tags) and warnings will be an aggregate of the various works in the series. For example, if a series contains one work marked "No Archive Warnings Apply" and tagged "tea", and another work with a warning for "Graphic Depictions of Violence" and tagged "horseback riding", then the series will carry the warnings "No Archive Warnings Apply" and "Graphic Depictions of Violence", and will be tagged "tea" and "horseback riding".

The rating for a series will be the same as the most explicit rating of the works in the series. So, if the series contains one work rated "Mature" and another work rated "Explicit", the series will be rated "Explicit".

Who shows up as a creator of a series?

The "Creator(s)" field for the series will list anyone who has been designated as a series co-creator, whether that person has actually posted any works to the series or not. For more information about managing series co-creators, refer to How do I add or remove series co-creators?.

How do I create a new series?

Refer to How do I add works to a series?.

How do I add works to a series?

You can add a new work to a series as you are posting the work. On the Post New Work page, find the "Associations" section and select "This work is part of a series". You can add the work to an existing series by selecting it from the menu, or create a new series by entering a new series name in the field provided.

To add an existing work to a series, go to the Edit Work page and follow the same instructions as above.

For more information about posting and editing works, check out How do I post a new work? and How do I edit a work?.

Can I add a work to multiple series?

It is possible to add a work to multiple series. After the work has been posted, you can hit the "Edit" button and select an additional series, as described in How do I add works to a series? You can repeat this as many times as you wish. All the series that the work belongs to will be listed under the "This work is part of a series" checkbox.

Can I post an incomplete series?

Yes. Even if you are posting only the first work in a planned series, you can still select "This work is part of a series" and create a new series to hold it (refer to How do I add works to a series?). Doing so will allow fans to subscribe to the series to be notified when you post a new installment. (Refer to How do I subscribe to or unsubscribe from a work or series?).

Also refer to How do I mark a series complete?.

How do I remove a work from a series?

To remove a work from a series, you'll need to go to the Edit Work page for the work you want to remove. In the Associations section, under "This work is part of a series", find the section called "Current Series". Find the row of buttons corresponding to the series from which you want to remove the work, and select "Remove". Note that this action will immediately take you back out to the series' main page, and any other changes you have made on the Edit Work page will not be saved.

How do I edit a series?

Each series has an Edit Series page, which you can reach either from the series’ index page or by using the "Series" link from My Dashboard. On the Edit Series page, you can edit the title, description, and notes fields for the series. If you have more than one pseud, you can designate which of your pseuds are associated with the series. You can also add a co-author, and you can mark whether a series is complete or not.

How do I add or remove series co-creators/co-authors?

In order for more than one person to be able to post works to a series, any additional contributors need to be designated as co-creators. To make someone a co-creator, go to the Edit Series page and select the "Add co-authors" checkbox. Enter your co-creator's user name or pseud in the field provided. You can use the autocomplete suggestions to make sure you're getting their correct user name or pseud. If your co-creator has multiple pseuds, all their pseuds will show up as autocomplete options. Regardless of which pseud you add as a co-creator, that person will be able to access the Edit Series page, where they can change the associated pseud if necessary. If you have entered the wrong user name or pseud, you can remove it by simply selecting the “x” beside their name.

Once you are sure you have entered the correct pseud(s), select the "Update" button at the bottom of the page to finalize the changes. Before hitting the Update button, it's important to make sure you are adding the correct person because you cannot remove co-creators from a series. The only way to remove a co-creator is for that person to remove themselves, as described in How do I remove myself as a creator of a series?. If you do end up adding a co-creator by mistake, and you don't know how to contact them to have them remove themselves, you can use the Support and Feedback form to ask for help.

As is the case with co-creators of works, all co-creators of series need to have Archive accounts.

For more information about pseuds, go to the Pseuds FAQ.

How do I mark a series complete?

On the Edit Series page, select the "This series is complete" checkbox at the bottom of the page, then select the "Update" button. This will cause the series to show up as "Complete: Yes" on the series index page.

How do I delete a series?

You can delete a series using the "Delete Series" button on the series' index or Edit Series page. If your browser has JavaScript enabled, selecting this button will bring up a pop-up confirmation window; select "OK" to proceed with deleting your series. The works that were part of the series will not be deleted, but they will no longer appear as a series. For information on deleting the works themselves, go to How do I delete a work?.

How do I change the order of the works in a series?

You can change the order of the works in a series using the "Reorder Series" button on the series' index or Edit Series page. Here, you can drag and drop the works to reorder them, if your browser supports this. If not, there are boxes to the left of the work titles where you can enter numbers to indicate your desired order. When you are finished reordering, hit the "Update Positions" button.

How do I orphan a series?

You can orphan a series using the "Orphan Series" button on the series' index or Edit Series page. Please note that this is permanent and irreversible—you are giving up control over the series, including the ability to edit or delete the series or any of its works, and you are unable to reclaim it. For more information about orphaning, refer to the Orphaning FAQ. If you select "Orphan Series" and the series has more than one creator, your identifying information will be removed from the series and all the works in it, but the other creators' names will remain in place.

How do I remove myself as a creator of a series?

If you are listed as a creator of a series, you can remove yourself from both the series and any of its works. On the index or Edit Series page, use the button labeled "Remove Me As Author". This will remove you as a co-creator of all works in the series. However, this function will not work if you are the only creator of any works in the series.

For more information about removing yourself as co-creator of an individual work, go to How do I add or remove co-creators?.

If you want to remove yourself as the only creator of a series, your only option will be to orphan the series. Refer to How do I orphan a series? and the Orphaning FAQ.
