  1. I SO AGREE. And aside from his death, there were so many unanswered questions at the end of the book. How does Annie raise a child? Will she be able to handle it, or will the lose of Finnick break her? And Johanna! Does she come back from that psychotic break, or does she say crazy forever? And if she does recover, what will she do now?

    1. It doesn't help with Annie that there are about seven lines in total about the book. And when we meet her, we are told about what she is like rather than shown. For a character who is more interesting than Katniss, it isn't nearly enough. Mockingjay reeked of "I have a deadline, I will write the cliffnotes for a fourth book at the end of my third book." Not only was the ending depressing, but so much was left unresolved.

I'm angry about the way we never learn what happens to Johanna, or Annie after the war. We see that Annie is there when they decide about The Hunger Games, but she is way too much of a background character.

We never learn about what happens to Johanna, do they help her or is she psychotic for life? Where does she go to live after all of this? Back to Victor's Village in some pitiful life as Katniss? Or does she go on to do more?

The only good thing is about her leaving so much up in the air is that it gives fanfic writers such amazing material. I'm actually glad the last movie has been split in two, because whoever is writing the script is going to have a great outline to rewrite. Heck, I would love it if the scriptwriter released a second, non YA version of Mockingjay, or the events of Mockingjay from the perspective of other characters.

      1. Yes Yes Yes!

You just read my mind, my doe. (I hope you don't mind that, I'm a bit keen on terms of endearment)

I literally just said this on another thread, but I'm going to repeat it.. Everyone thinks Annie or Finnick is the most tragic character in the series, but no. That title belongs to Johanna.

In CF, when she says "There's no one left that I love," it broke my heart. I believe she was completely in love with Finnick, like others. But what she said was so true. So painfully true. Finnick wasn't hers, so she really didn't have anyone for them to use against her. The fear of losing the one you love was something she'd already felt when he chose Annie. Then when he actually dies, she loses the last bit of the person she cared about.
Finnick and Annie's loses can't compare. No one's can for that matter.
Finnick died. Annie gets to hold onto Finnick by having their son (if she realizes that and is able to recover). Katniss loses Prim but gets to keep Finnick. Peeta gets Katniss. Gale lives with the grief and pain of Katniss, but gets to move on knowing she's happy.

Johanna gets nothing. I wish Mockingjay ended with Johanna finding something- anything- to have. But it doesn't. Honestly, the lack of closure for Johanna upsets me most of all.

        1. I never thought about that, but you do have an excellent point about Johanna being the most tragic character of the series. With Finnick, we get a bit of closure with Annie, but with Johanna we get absolutely nothing. In the end of the book, she has no one left. I wonder if she maintains some type of friendship with Annie? At the end of the book, Collins could have had some reference to the two of them being friends, but there was nothing. It makes Johanna a potentially dangerous character, because she has nothing to lose, nor any family to keep her grounded.

Gale loses Katniss, but to some extent the way Katniss changed, I can't see him wanting to keep her!

Hmm, I'm now thinking about what type of a pairing Johanna/Gale could make.

          1. A lot of people pair them together, but I don't like it that much. I believe Johanna belongs with...someone else. But, alas, that's in the sequel to Crash. :)

Johanna/Gale is fun to write though! That's for sure.
