Ah man, thank you so much on such a thoughtful review! I hope to keep earning that trust - there are a few subplots going on here (can Sam get out at all? what will happen to Encom? can the Grid handle being networked? will the old segregations reestablish themselves?) so I try to keep it all balanced. I had originally planned simply to edit the earlier version of this story but then figured a thorough recut would work best, which in the end meant a load of rewriting from scratch. But it's great fun, and I'm immensely relieved to learn it works!
And yeah, programs behaving like programs is a huge thing for me; not much fic goes there but I am in love with the '82 film and the strangely adorable alien-ness of its computer characters. I like to think that they appear human on the surface, both in render and demeanour because that's something they inherit from their writers and it's easier for Users to relate to, but fundamentally they are still software and damn me if I won't squeeze in every silly observation from working with computers that I possibly can. It's just as great to focus on a security suite - these tend to sit heavy on a system and slow it down with pedantry, so how would that manifest in an anthropomorphic way? Etc, etc. I am very lucky to have actual techies say the fic is relatable in that respect, and hope to keep it up.
OK, enough blather from me - on to chapter 4, which is almost ready...
