What a gorgeous story. I love all the little period details, like Betty being legitimately frightened of being fired, and there being no mention of words like homosexuality or lesbianism, just Betty looking at Kate "like a man would." I particularly enjoyed the scene with Gladys and Betty drinking champagne on New Year's Eve, and the final scene on the train. You write Gladys' friendship with Betty, and her attempts to understand what Betty is going through, in an utterly believable way. I hope you will write more for this fandom!
