From long discussion on the subject of Gay Boromir with lots of people who are smarter more well-read and perceptive than I, I came to the conclusion that JRRT must have known, and most probably respected, many gay men - he didn't live in a monastery or a vacuum. So as close as he could get to recognizing their existence, and contributions, would have been in allusions like "taking no wife, and seeking pleasure in arms."
Unfortunately, the "TEH GAY IS AN INSULT TO TOLKIEN!" wars are not dead. So I just ignore them. *g*
Having stumbled in through the movieverse door after having read and forgotten Tolkien in elementary and junior high school, I was unaware of the gay wars, and remembered only that I'd been sure from the appendices that I always thought Boromir was gay. *g* So I don't get involved in the wars since being a movie-first fan is nearly as atrocious for many Tolkien die-hards as believing even Tolkien made clear Boromir's sexual orientation!
