Comment on An Unexpected Fellowship

Thank you so much! I've been putting in recipients on a bunch of older fics this morning, and it's strange -- not just nostalgia for a couple of the fandoms, but nostalgia for a couple of the people with whom I have little contact or in one case with whom the relationship ended in flames. (Do I leave the dedication off? Is it just opening old wounds to put it on where certain people will see it? I don't know...)

Anyway, I have a hard time writing Rohirrim, for no really good reason; I don't have much of a sense of Theoden's interior life at all, and only a bit with Eomer and Theodred (whereas Aragorn, Boromir and Faramir used to talk to me all the time). I have no problem gleaning from Tolkien's notes that even he didn't think Boromir had a wife in his future, nor that the biggest thing Faramir and Eowyn had in common was adoration for Aragorn. *g* So I'm glad this works for you!

    Happy New Year!

    1. From long discussion on the subject of Gay Boromir with lots of people who are smarter more well-read and perceptive than I, I came to the conclusion that JRRT must have known, and most probably respected, many gay men - he didn't live in a monastery or a vacuum. So as close as he could get to recognizing their existence, and contributions, would have been in allusions like "taking no wife, and seeking pleasure in arms."

Unfortunately, the "TEH GAY IS AN INSULT TO TOLKIEN!" wars are not dead. So I just ignore them. *g*

Having stumbled in through the movieverse door after having read and forgotten Tolkien in elementary and junior high school, I was unaware of the gay wars, and remembered only that I'd been sure from the appendices that I always thought Boromir was gay. *g* So I don't get involved in the wars since being a movie-first fan is nearly as atrocious for many Tolkien die-hards as believing even Tolkien made clear Boromir's sexual orientation!
