This was really fun! It sounds like an Asimovian Powell and Donovan story--I love all the little touches of the heroes' personalities, and their banter with one another. And there's a crazy robot, too, and everything--and for once it's Donovan who saves the day, in an eminently practical way.
In a fit of generosity, Powell had bought him one for their first Christmas as a team, seeing the way Donovan went through books, and also the way he inevitably destroyed them. Donovan had been offended. "You can't pound that on a desk, can you? Fling it across a room? Line suitcases with it?" -- I love those lines. That is just the sort of thing Donovan would say about ebook readers--and just the sort of thing Asimov might have written if he had conceived of ebooks as we have them today.
