Comment on The OTW is Recruiting Tag Wranglers, Plus Communications and Translation Staff

  1. Is it possible to NOT show "(past) relationship" under the same relationship tag? I and people I know often feel frustrated to see those stories show up in the tag because we don't consider past relationships to be the "same" as the relationship itself when we're looking for stories under a specific relationship tag.

    1. Makes absolute sense to me. When I want to feel happy/satisfied about a ship, I'm not looking to read about how they broke up and aren't together, lol.

      1. Exactly. Also, almost all of the fics with the "(past) relationship" tag aren't about that relationship at all, which makes it even more absurd to consider them the same under the AO3 tag system. Those fics are about one of the characters getting together with another character, and the past relationship is mentioned in passing. If I wanted to read that other ship, I'll just go to the other tag.

        1. Why not exclude specific pairings from your searches? This will at least filter out some of the "chaff" from your results.

          1. That is not the problem that I or others face in this case. The pairing I want to exclude is "(past) relationship A" and I want to read "relationship A." Right now they're considered the same tag on AO3. Filtering out "past" is the same as filtering out the pairing itself. As for the main pairings tagged along with "past relationship A," they could be anything. It's not as if only "relationship B" is tagged along with "past relationship A." It could be relationship B, C, D, E, etc.

Edit: By the way, I'm not sure if one can actually exclude pairings B in a search for pairing A without resorting to a third-party add-on. If there is, please let me know, although it still doesn't address my original issue.

            1. I exclude specific pairings a lot from my searches or use other non-standard search operators in the "Search within results" field. Some simple background info i found useful can be found here:

              1. Thanks for the tip! I tried testing "-past" and it seems to address my original issue as well (although based on the documentation, it might over-exclude). It'll do for now. Hopefully AO3 can roll out improvements eventually.

            2. A dummies guide (with screenshots) for excluding pairings is here:

        2. I hear you completely. I do still think it makes sense to consider that tag as a separate entity from the main ship tag, but at least they have the filtration system decorative_vegetable mentioned. Oh well. I know there can't always be a perfect solution and I'm sure the people who tag that for some reason feel justified in doing so. Sometimes they like to warn in case someone NOTPs that ship so hard they don't even want to think about that ship, and so they're just trying to help out? I get it from that standpoint. Still, a different tag for a different purpose.

The old chestnut of how to differentiate between main ships and background ships (whether it's the author or the reader) has been one of the most-requested features of the Archive for years now. I can't remember if they've said that there's going to be an option to differentiate in the future when you're posting/searching for fic, later on, but at least they're aware of it and it isn't being ignored completely. As far as I know, anyway.

And yeah, I've sometimes mentioned a background ship in case it's someone's NOTP and whatnot. But I tend to slip that into the additional tags section, like "implied character/character" or "past character/character" so as not to give them undue importance in the header and people won't think it's a major ship in the fic.
