If you've ever read Case of Shinra (OTWTAS), there are several occasions when Rufus seems very happy that the old Shinra's been destroyed. At one point he reflects that a time comes in every man's life when he has to leave his father's house and make his own way in the world. I really liked that. Further on in the story, the authorial voice comments that people regard him and his Turks, at Healin, as "playing at still having a company". Maybe - but they are having a great time! I think somewhere in ACC he says that he does what he does because it's "fun". I totally agree with you: he thrives on challenge, danger and thrills, which was probably a big reason why he got involved with Fuhito's AVALANCHE in the first place. As for the planet - his manner of caring for it is obviously not the same as Barret's or Aerith's, yet I'm sure in some way he feels that it belongs to him or is his by right, and so he would want to take care of it in that sense. Rufus doesn't trash things he owns for no reason, and I doubt money interests him much per se. (Look at me talking like he's a real person).
The BC transcript is a bit of a dog's breakfast but full of fanfic potential.
Fic potential would be my main reason for reading it. I think I got about halfway through last time before getting sidetracked. I need to finish it sooner or later, because it is relevant to one of the series I have started. I haven't read Case of Shinra - but I have OTWTAS somewhere in my bookmarks, so I will have to go check that out.
