Sheep and cattle were snatched, naught left but a bloody smear in the grass. Children were shuttered indoors for fear that they would be taken, too. Brave villagemen and adventurers who ventured into the woods were never seen again. Many times, the village had pleaded to their king for help, but was ignored.
