Give me all of the AU tellings. Is Rosie a magical creature set forth to encourage the American woman, or is she simply a housewife on the line waiting for her husband to come back? Tell me of the women she motivates. Tell me of those moments where she pushed back against authority and stood up for the righteous. What about her life after the war? Magical realism appreciated!

This is my favorite fairytale, and I adore all sorts of different versions and tellings of it! Give me AUS, retellings, Belle-as-Beast, unusual reasons for her TO be considered beastly, etc. ANYTHING.

Take me inside of the chateau. Tell me of the long winter of Belle's pre-beast's revival. Give me missing scenes of their bonding. What if the beast had indeed died - how would Belle get on with her life, if she could, as normal after experiencing the castle.

Tell me of Belle's father's relationship with her mother before her death.

Or give me Beast backstory. Or tell me about Belle's youth. Tell me about her father. Was it a conventional upbringing or an unconventional one? History-rich stories would be interesting but if you'd like to give me a moon colony AU I'd adore that! Absolutely anything you can cook up would be welcome.

The amount of cracky porn you could wring out of the concept of a super-sensitive princess who has to prove said sensitivity to get a prince writes itself. But conversely: tell me of her childhood. Does she have a family? What sort of queen does she ultimately make? Does her family have to worry about bruising, too?

    Summary

I am really charmed that this was nominated, and, in fact, its inclusion tipped me over into signing up; I'm otherwise trying to be more restrained about exchanges this year. So: go wild, dear author. Why are the Lion and Unicorn fighting? What is the significance of the plum cake? Is this a deadly combat, a recurring ritual, or just what the Lion and Unicorn do to kill time on, say, a Tuesday afternoon? Are they always the same Lion and the same Unicorn?

Anything from a deeply serious and mystical take to a fic of utter crack will be welcome.

I am somewhat ignorant about both British history and heraldry, so draw on that or not as you choose. Would love a story stuffed with heraldic tidbits; would also love a story that relies on nothing beyond what we get in the rhyme.

For all requests: alternate universes & settings are very welcome. Feel free to mix in elements from nominated fairy tales that I didn't specifically request, if you so choose. I am not writing a specific letter for this exchange round, but the URL attached to this sign-up will point you to several past letters, if you'd like to browse them.

    Summary

On the one hand: go queen! She manages the kingdom while the king's gone AND manages to rescue him with guile and diplomacy! On the other hand: why did she deceive her king on the way home? Did she disapprove of his warmongering, or feel as though she had to prove herself, or... what?

That had to be a really awkward scene in the end: the queen's triumph, but the king's shame. It seems to me that the relationship between the king and queen has more going on than is first apparent. I'd love a story that delves into that relationship. I'd also love to hear more about her in general. Did her skill at music come from her education as a lady? Did she have an unusual background/upbringing? What's her relationship with the king's ministers?

This is kind of a long shot, but I'd also, optionally, love to see how the story changes if both the Lute Player and her consort are female. Give me a queen who goes to war and the queen who brings her back from the war.

    Summary

I have loved this fairy tale for a very long time. I'd be fascinated by a character study for either of these characters at any point in the story. One of my favourite things about the tale is the sense of the size of the world. Our heroine moves through different realms and travels beyond any sensible geography. I love that. If you can capture that sense of space, I'd be thrilled.

Another thing I love about this tale-type is that there's a transgression in the middle of the story that is then redeemed. Stories about messing up and making things right are really appealing for me. If you want to explore that in some way, that would be great. (How did the bear prince get into this predicament, again? Maybe his own transgressions should be further explored.)

    Summary

I love this paradoxical princess, who is apparently exquisitely sensitive, but who appears on the scene in a storm, at the end of a long journey. Something doesn't add up. How about a subversive take? Is she running a con? Is the pea the prince's way of tricking his parents into letting him marry the woman he actually wants?

Or, taking her at her word: where did she come from and why has she been travelling?

If you're interested in an AU take on this, the story already feels a bit like a romantic comedy to me, so something along those lines that's modern or in a particular time period or favourite setting would be very welcome.

    Summary

I don't have clear prompts for this one, sorry. Just some vague things for you to explore, but I hope that suits and if it doesn't please feel free to ask me for more prompts (for this or any other request) through the kindly mod.

Why was it necessary for Elisa to stay silent all that time to break the enchantment? Was it so that she could experience some of the brothers' alienation from the world? It occurs to me that she is re-learning to talk at the same time as the brothers are re-learning to walk among men.

Reading this as a child, I was indignant on Elisa's behalf when the king's people spoke against her and threatened her because of her strangeness and silence. But, it occurs to me that what they fear - that Elisa is a witch who will bring harm to the king and kingdom - is exactly what happened with Elisa's own parents. So: what are the signs of a witch, in this world? What are their powers and why do they do what they do?

(Did Elisa and her brothers ever meet their father again, or defeat the evil queen as well as her enchantment? That's a plot thread I'd love to see revisited.)

Most of these are big questions, but I'd love to see any single moment explored: Elisa going out to get more nettles (the moment the king realises just how obsessed with/ dedicated to this project she is); the swans celebrating being swans or mourning being human; the swan brothers adapting to their fate at different paces and in different ways; and of course the youngest brother coming to terms with his newest/final body.

Another idea: what exactly were the brothers doing for all those years as swans? Were they doing anything that would benefit them later as humans? Elisa worked incredibly hard for them for a very long time - did they ever repay her? And if so, how?

This story is a new one to me and I love the worldbuilding! How about a re-telling from the bogies' point of view? (They didn't get anything to eat. They must be hungry. Horror welcome.) Or another adventure that befalls the Moon? Maybe something with the personified Winds? I love the way the humans are depicted in this story, pragmatic but not entirely effectual, but I also like that they are only one small element of a large and fantastical world.

Tell me a tale of the founding of Britain, a la Geoffrey of Monmouth. Maybe tell me of the women that were there as well, or anthropomorphise the nations; what were the smaller battles that were fought, and who fought them? What scars did Troy lay upon people and what might Britain have looked like if this origin was more truth than myth?

I love the Nights, though I prefer some of the latter translations such as Mahdi's.

I'd love to see whatever you can create for the Nights - is there a layer to peel back that would allow for a taste of the collection that pre-existed the collection as we currently know it?

What happened to Shahrzad? Did she bear Shahryar a son? Daughters? Did she believe in the Djinn that she told tales of? Did she practise magic, worship other gods? What did her world look like, and how did it feel to walk to her doom?

(I have dabbled in the Nights; if you want to borrow, remix or reference said fics, please do!)

I love how this myth varies whilst remaining essentially the same across much of northern Europe, and how individual versions soborn local heroes and deities. I've written of one featuring Sir Francis Drake for example!

I nominated Gwynn ap Nudd this time, one of the versions of the myth that features the Fae. Other local myths that go with Gwynn so Nude include that the gateway to his underworld is in the Tor at Glastonbury - which is also one of the proposed locations of Avalon.

Tell me of a hunt and who they hunted; of what it feels like when you ride with the hunt. Of a feast at the court of Gwynn ap Nudd; does Arthur wait with him?

This is one of my favorite mythological/fairytale stories. Scheherazade always struck me as an incredible heroine and character. I would love to see what her experience is throughout the story. How did she gather the courage to offer herself up? How did she come up with all of her stories? Does she also fall in love with the King?

Another potential idea is a modern updating of the tale--maybe Shahryar is a famous celebrity who's been working his way through all of a city's eligible bachelorettes, leaving heartbrakes in his wake, demanding that his agent keep finding him new dates or Shahryar will fire him. Eventually Scheherazade offers herself... Or maybe it's a modern update with the traditional beheadings/virgin requirements.

Maybe the story isn't a literal one thousand and one nights but Scheherazade is cursed to repeat the same day and so she begins to tell the story as a way to make each day survivable (maybe the curse allows the King to remember the previous parts of the story or he's also cursed? Or...some other explanation!). Only when the King falls in love with her does the curse end.

There's no way to go wrong with however you want to go with this story!

I've always loved the story of Robin Hood--especially the relationship between Maid Marian and Robin Hood. I'd love to see that explored further (how did they meet? what are Marian and Robin's perspectives on Robin's activities? what is Marian's role in the vigilante actions?). Maid Marian is such an interesting character--there's a ton of different takes on her, so I would love to see your take on her history and experience.

If you're into modern updates, I would also be down to see an updated version of Maid Marian and Robin Hood. Maybe he's a vigilante hacker fighting the good fight against evil corporations or individuals or maybe he's still an archer (a la Hawkeye), physically stopping the corrupt. Or maybe a version of Robin Hood set in the Wild West--Robin and his group of merry men are fighting against corrupt lawmen and Maid Marian provides assistance (or joins in!).

Give me your epic ghost ship stories! I would love to hear about people interacting with the Lady Lovibond--maybe a modern day ship that gets drawn in? Or someone who goes out in search of the ship, maybe to bring peace to the crew?

Or if you want to focus on the demise of the ship and her inhabitants, what really happened that night? Was it just jealousy that caused the first mate to steer the ship onto the sands or did something else happen? Something darker and more evil?

Another idea is to focus on the captain's wife, Annetta. How did she come to be married to Simon? Maybe she was taken and this was the only way to escape them. Or maybe she was a sea creature, come to take revenge for something that the crew had done earlier...
