Summary
Sam had known how Dean felt about him when he'd left for Stanford. His own feelings weren't so clear. He'd needed time away from it all, hunting, his father, and especially Dean. It took him five years and a degree he hadn't planned on to realize there was only one person he wanted to share his life with. He'd never considered the possibility that Dean would move on without him...or that something could happen that would erase him from his brother's life completely.

What's weird is that there is suddenly a twelfth century Scottish village nestled on the South Carolina shoreline. What's weirder is that none of the residents of the nearby town seem to think anything is wrong. The Winchesters swing in expecting to deal with the village and be on their way; after all, weird is their business. But then it deals with itself, vanishing with Dean inside. Suddenly, Dean is trapped in Ron Mor, and Sam is left in South Carolina, wondering how the hell to get him back. But that is only the beginning of their problems, because a month later, Dean suddenly shows up on the beach naked and disoriented, barely remembering Sam's name. Sam begins to realise that more has happened to his brother than he can possibly comprehend.

People thought life was tough in 1983; oil shortages and high mortgage rates and nuclear war on the horizon, but then something broke through the veil and it really became tough. People died by the hundreds of millions. Miles and miles of land became unusable. Communication,transportation, civil law… all of them were just wisps of what they could have been.
The government threw out reasons for the disaster that didn’t explain how Dust became a living thing covering half of North America, or how a virus turned people evil and then made them disappear, and they certainly didn’t explain why magic was suddenly real or why certain people were so good at bending it.
They also couldn’t explain how, in the depths of civilization’s collapse, one family’s destiny could save the world.

Summary

He's rescued from a monster attack by a young stranger named Sam.
