Sam had known how Dean felt about him when he'd left for Stanford. His own feelings weren't so clear. He'd needed time away from it all, hunting, his father, and especially Dean. It took him five years and a degree he hadn't planned on to realize there was only one person he wanted to share his life with. He'd never considered the possibility that Dean would move on without him...or that something could happen that would erase him from his brother's life completely.

Jared sort of figured that death would mean a change in location. He just didn't think he'd have to move to Los Angeles and start working as a grim reaper. Every day, he and his colleagues (Jensen, Misha and Genevieve) meet up at the Bavarian Waffle House to get their assignments from their boss, Loretta. After a rough start, Jared and Jensen just click - and decide that there's really no reason for dead guys to play by the rules. They have questions, and a road trip to Texas might help them get some answers.
While this fic is based on the premise of "Dead Like Me", it's not a retelling. This universe has its own rules and its own story, sprinkled with occasional references to the source.Warnings: Things that come with the territory: mentions of pain and illness, a few gory details, character death. Neither of the Js is any deader in the end than he was in the beginning, though.

After his father's death, Jensen Ackles returns to his small hometown of Miracle, Texas to take over the family horse ranch. Jensen had promised himself as a teenager that he'd get out of that town for good, but without a job to go back to in Dallas he doesn't have much of a choice. He sets out to make something of the place and creates a website to attract boarders. The Southern Star Ranch's website attracts the attention of an up and coming actor, Jared Padalecki, who is researching his next role in a big, Hollywood drama set on a ranch and he gets in contact with Jensen to see if he can come down to get some hands on experience. What happens is a little more than what either of them ever expected.
