Firefly AU. After the scandal of the Miranda broadcast, the Verse is in political turmoil--the opportune moment for those who want to make a change. Brendon Urie is a Companion, heading for Sihnon to meet up with other members of the Guild so that he can use his political influence to bring about positive change in the Parliament and the Verse. However, Brendon needs to get off Newhall and make his way back to the core planets, first. The ship he finds harbours a bit of an eccentric crew, and both Captain Smith and his best friend onboard seem a little jumpy, especially around Alliance cruisers. Brendon figures he can work with that.
Spoilers for Firefly and Serenity, though no previous knowledge of either necessary. -

It's the journey that matters. They drive straight for a couple days, down the expanse of Interstate 15. Brendon takes weird delight in taking off-ramps and going on pointless side trips, even veering cross-country; eventually, though, he always finds his way back onto the highway. Mud clings tenaciously to the tread of their tires, and the gleaming metal bodywork is smudged and clouded into obscurity with choking red dust. There is dust in Ryan's eyes and every time he swallows, he can taste it thick on his tongue.
