'Those two are inseparable, Bilbo,' Gandalf observed, watching Frodo and Sam walking hand-in-hand across the sunny garden.

'Yes, yes, they are. And have been ever since Frodo came to Bag End.' Bilbo smiled. 'Childhood sweethearts, I call them. Just in jest, of course, and not in front of Frodo. Lads his age are sensitive, don't you know.'

Frodo bent and scooped the youngster into his arms. He held Sam up so that he could smell a daisy nodding on a green stem taller than he was.

'I do know, and I daresay you are right.' But childhood sweethearts oftimes grew into true lovers, and seeing the two heads, one dark, one golden, close together, Gandalf thought that perhaps Bilbo spoke more truly than he knew.
