After John's released and back home at Baker St, Sherlock still feels it. Down the centre of his chest there's an ache like a healing wound. A physical awareness of a body he usually ignores as much as he can. It's psychosomatic, nothing more interesting than that.

    An outstanding series.

It explores genderqueer identity (if comments are to be believed, highly accurately) while being beautifully written. It peers deep into why Sherlock finds sex alarming, and then provides an outstanding example of deliciously arousing sex anyway.

Dreamy creepy casefic body love really everything a Johnlock story needs. Plus a perceptive description of what depression feels like.

    -- begin quote ---
John will encourage him, praise him, because for John, being dressed and clean and eating meals makes him feel better. John will see him doing Real Human Person things and feel relief, thinking he's seeing the result of Sherlock getting better, rather than the result of Sherlock (broken, exhausted, toiling, barely keeping himself together) using the whole of his energy to make himself get up and do things he doesn't want to, and that won't make him feel better, and that never help him get better. Because John loves him but doesn't understand.

    --- quote ends ---

I suspect there's an echo of ACD canon but I haven't been able to scry it. No matter, still outstanding.

You may think that Sherlock can read minds already, but it's nothing compared with the abilities John develops after an unpleasant incident.

    begin quote

Sherlock narrowed his eyes. John could feel the frustration coming off him. “Congratulations, John, you’re an enigmatic mindreader. A little cliche, don't you think? I don’t know why I bothered asking.”

“No, I honestly have no idea how to describe it. It’s like explaining your deductions, except I have no clues to drawn from, only whatever people happen to be thinking at the moment,” John said reasonably. “And believe me, I know how bloody annoying it is being around someone who knows what you’re thinking all the time.”

Sweaty soliloquy in Sherlock's brain as all coherent cognition is systematically squeezed out by sensation and passion. Quote begins mid-fellatio:

The realization that this mouth which you thought was just an outbox, that you thought was impenetrable, as much as even food entering in it felt as a sacrilege, this mouth, my mouth, would make an exception for you.”

Brief scenes of action narrated by John, completely in character and in danger. These coalesce into lovely focus, with promise of love.

If they talk now, Sherlock will put words between them and this and whatever comes next, because Sherlock words things. Cuts them into syllables and phonemes and tries to dissect the result.

And so they don’t talk, and instead Sherlock climbs into John’s bed, his breathing hitches, and he lies down facing John. John pulls the blankets back up, and for a moment the tension in Sherlock’s body has him doubting his conclusions as much as his methods.

Poetic exploration of Sherlock's life-long fascination with diagrams, systems, and maps. Runs on a parallel track with seasons 1 and 2, while cleverly anticipating several S3 elements.

    quote begins

He loves the Tube map. The coy little dip of the Central line; the steady, sturdy sweep of the Northern; District and Circle holding tight to each other as they rush dizzily around the City; that painfully blue right angle in Victoria, elbowing out into surprising empty space. He traces his finger around them over and over. Kilburn Park, Maida Vale, Warwick Avenue, Paddington.

He could make a Tube map of life. Insurance Fraud, Infidelity, Absent Father, Murder. People’s lives are messy, but under the surface, they always run on tracks. If he could map their connections, perhaps life would be more like a diagram, and less like someone shouting constantly in his ear. He begins to watch people, to work out their lines.

    Bookmarker's Notes

My god this is SO GREAT! Evidently canon neglected to mention an important part of John's character: he loves anatomical drawings.

Thankfully Saki101 fills this gap with completely believable seduction via life drawing.

I love a calmed-down John with the finally fulfilled hunger for the huge set of Faber-Castells Sherlock gives him. I'm so glad that his suppressed rages have flamed out enough for him to focus on drawing. In that discipline I'm particularly happy about the combination of the surreal and the anatomical.

Here Sherlock's asleep and John is impatiently awake...

    quote begins

In fact, I wasn’t sleep deprived at all when we took the case. That’s why he is asleep and I’m not. Eight, nine hours was all I needed to get sorted. I’m rested. I’m showered and shaved and dressed. I’m well fed, breakfast and lunch, the latter with Mrs Hudson before she went out. I’m informed. I’ve read the papers, checked the news online. I can’t be bothered with the telly. Without the simultaneous commentary to which I have become accustomed, it is tedious. The commentator is asleep.

    [ ... snip ... ]

The door to his room is very closed. So is the door from the bathroom. I checked. I could breathe through the keyhole, I suppose, but that’s not likely to wake him up. And I wouldn’t want to wake him, he needs the sleep. I prefer it when he sleeps on the sofa though, or thinks on it, stretched out or curled up, it seems the right place for him. Not locked away in his room. Well, I doubt the door is locked. I haven’t checked that.

Outstanding exploration of the first few months of S & J's cohabitation (e.g., GEN). As always with this author, the writing is great and there's equal measure of laughter and sorrow.

Sherlock is simply there, smack in the middle of John’s life, and the man is absolutely mental. He’s the fine line between fireworks and an explosion. He’s utterly nonsensical sometimes, only to become obvious with a week of hindsight at hand. Sometimes John doesn’t know if he’s living with a mad scientist or an artist of logic and inference. A bit of both, must be, and it’s fascinating.

Watching telly with Mrs Hudson is well and good, but with Sherlock, there’s never a rerun.

But no, he decides as he flicks on the lights and heads for the thermostat, Sherlock had just finished a case, some heady and intellectually thrilling affair that had involved copious amounts of research. Outstanding visit to the Mind Palace during the dinner prep at the Holmes' in HLV.

Sherlock imagines he would come first - masturbation has always been about efficiency and speed, or at least, it had been until John had sauntered into his thoughts - but old habits and inclinations die hard. He wonders if the order of orgasms is important, if John would care one way or another, but then John is so accepting of most things (heads in the fridge, thumbs in the crisper), so perhaps this would not be an issue?

Outstanding evocation of the alcoholic John sinking into blackouts. Very sad, totally believable given Moftiss canon.

John doesn’t always drink alone. He goes out, sits in pubs, stares out windows, watches other people being happy. There are a few mornings when he doesn’t remember how he got home, but he doesn’t worry about it. Because he got home in the end. It doesn’t matter how much he remembers; remembering isn’t much good for him right now, is it. Remembering is hell, in fact, and forgetting is peaceful, so he doesn’t mind the blacking out, and he doesn’t worry about it. A doctor should know better? Sure. He’s trying to get through the day just now. That’s all. He just needs to get through the day. And the night.

If nothing you want to remember happens to you, it’s easy not to count the evenings that vanish. They all blur together anyway. There’s nothing there of note. Wood panelling, a bar stool, rain, stumbling home unable to feel your extremities, trying not to think. What’s to remember anyway? Brush your teeth, go to bed, forget. It’s only pain. Let it fade away.

John is quietly, stoically, morosely drunk when Sherlock joins him. He’s staring out the window, ignoring everything around him, blank.

“You’ve got to stop this,” Sherlock says to him. “It’s getting out of hand.”
