Archive FAQ > Subscriptions and Feeds

What is a Subscription?

A subscription is a way of tracking new works posted on the Archive. It allows you to receive email notifications when a particular user posts a new work or chapter, or when a particular work is updated. We are continuing to develop this feature.

What is 'My Subscriptions'?

Under 'User Dashboard & My Subscriptions', you will find a list of users and works you have subscribed to. You can unsubscribe from this page. In the future, we'll be adding more options for managing subscriptions.

What can I keep track of using subscriptions?

You can use subscriptions to keep track of individual users and individual works-in-progress. When you have subscribed to a user, you will receive an email notification every time they post a new work or chapter. When you subscribe to an individual work, you will receive an email notification when a new chapter is posted.

How do I subscribe to a user?

You subscribe to a user from their user profile, e.g. Testy. Select the 'subscribe' button to start following that user.

How do I unsubscribe from a user?

When you are subscribed to a user, their profile page will show an 'Unsubscribe' button. Select this to unsubscribe. You can also manage your subscriptions under 'My subscriptions' on your User Dashboard.

How do I subscribe to a work?

You subscribe to a work from its individual work page. Select the 'subscribe' button at the top of the page to start receiving emails when a new chapter is added.

How do I unsubscribe from a work?

If you got back to the work page there will be an 'Unsubscribe' button. Click this to unsubscribe. You can also unsubscribe using the 'My Subscriptions' option on your User Dashboard. Select the link, 'Unsubscribe from [work title].'

How will I be notified when someone I have subscribed to posts something new or work gets updated?

When a user you have subscribed to posts a new work or a new chapter, or a work you have subscribed to gets updated, you'll receive an email.

Can I keep track of subscriptions without getting emails?

No, at present subscriptions are an email-only service. In the future, we hope to add other ways of keeping track such as an Archive 'reading page', but this isn't possible yet.

How can I keep track of works posted in a particular fandom?

You can use a feed!

What's a feed?

In addition to the email notifications, you can subscribe to a canonical fandom, relationship or character tag via a feed. A feed can be read in either a dedicated feed reader or can be syndicated on Livejournal or Dreamwidth.

Only a fandom's canonical tag?

Yes, this means that you get all the works connected to that fandom in your feed as the canonical tag collects all the variants of the the fandom tag - for example SPN and Supernatural - together. However, if something changes and the tag you have subscribed to is no longer marked as canonical, your feed will still work.

What about metatags?

If you subscribe to a ‘metatag’ which includes a lot of fandoms, you’ll get updates for all those fandoms – for example, subscribing to Marvel will give you a feed which includes Captain America (2011), X-Men First Class (2011), Marvel 616, Iron Man (Movies), and all the other fandom tags that wranglers have linked to the metatag.

How do I subscribe to a feed?

If you go to a fandom tag – for example Naruto - you’ll see a link at the top of the page, ‘Subscribe to feed’ with an orange icon beside it. Select that. This will then be updated in your feed reader or your Livejournal or Dreamwidth page if you have chosen to syndicate it.

How do I unsubscribe from a feed?

You will have to do this in your feed reader or on your Livejournal or Dreamwidth page as you would any another feed or syndication.

Can I subscribe only to works with a particular tag, or only completed works?

Feeds now let you subscribe to a particular tag, however at the moment this is only available for canonical fandom tags, and you cannot get email notifications for a fandom tag. In the future, we hope to include more options - for example, we would like to make it possible to subscribe to SuperFan's 'My Little Pony' works but not their 'Thundercats' works - but this isn't possible yet.

Can I subscribe to collections or challenges?

No, sorry! This is a feature we plan to introduce in the future.

What happens with unrevealed or anonymous works?

If someone you are subscribed to posts a work in a hidden or anonymous challenge, then you won't receive a subscription notification right away (because it would break the anonymity). Instead, you'll receive a subscription notification when the work and the creator's identity are revealed. Unrevealed works will also not appear in a fandom's Atom feed.
